# Why Perimenopause Feels So Different From One Woman to the Next

## And what actually determines whether this stage feels manageable... or overwhelming

If you are like me and my friends, sometime after 40 our conversations shift.

From carpools and playdates...

to sleepless nights, hot flashes, or unpredictable periods.

We expect it to be a little rocky.

But what’s surprising is this:

It’s not one symptom.

It’s everything.

Not just sleep.

Not just mood.

Not just weight.

It feels like your whole body has been rewired.

And here’s what I find fascinating.

Two women can be in the exact same stage of life…
... and have completely different experiences.

One feels like she doesn’t even recognize her body anymore.

And another says,

“I feel mostly fine.”

Same age.
Same stage.

Very different experience.

In fact, did you know in some cultures there isn’t even a word for menopause because it is such a non-event.

So why the difference?

Most people assume it’s genetics.

And while genetics play a role…

what I see over and over again is this:

👉 Perimenopause doesn’t create the problem.
It amplifies what’s already happening in the body.

It turns the volume up.

## What Gets Amplified

It’s less about new symptoms showing up and more about the body not tolerating what it used to.

For Example:

Exhaustion
You used to handle stress just fine, now even small things feel overwhelming.
A nervous system that feels like a cornered, wounded animal.
Exhausted… but wired at the same time.

Periods
Used to be predictable, monthly PMS -
Take some Advil, eat some ice cream, move on.

Now it’s:

- heavy flow that resembles a crime scene
- next-level irritation (like hearing someone chew or clear their throat)
- boobs so tender it hurts to wear a bra
sweating through your pajamas and sheets

Sleep
You used to sleep through the night
Maybe a bad night here and there.

Now?
[Wide awake at 3am](https://fabulousafter40guide.substack.com/p/3am-wake-up-midlife-weight-gain?r=3iwpb6) like clockwork
Not remembering what it feels like to sleep through the night
Or waking up feeling like your bed is on fire

Weight
A summer of cocktails, BBQs, travel, and lake days used to mean a few extra pounds.

Then fall would come, you’d clean things up…
and the weight would come off

Now?
It feels [impossible to lose weight](https://fabulousafter40guide.substack.com/p/why-you-arent-losing-weight-in-midlife?r=3iwpb6)
And extra pounds are showing up in places they never used to.

Sometimes it feels like there’s no off switch.

## What' Actually Happening

This is where things start to make sense.

If these systems were already under strain...
Perimenopause doesn’t create the problem, it amplifies it. 📢

For example:

- The woman who feels wired at night often has a cortisol pattern that’s shifted later into the evening
- The woman gaining weight despite eating the same often has subtle [insulin resistance](https://fabulousafter40guide.substack.com/p/cgm-midlife-weight-gain?r=3iwpb6) that’s now packing on pounds
- The woman waking at 3 AM may have changes in blood sugar stability or cortisol rising (not falling) at night
- The woman dealing with autoimmune symptoms has an immune system that’s more reactive and overwhelmed
- The woman who suddenly feels anxious may have shifts in nutrients, hormones, gut balance or all the above These don’t come out of nowhere. They were already there. Perimenopause just makes them harder to ignore. This is what I call the Perimenopause Pinch Point.

## Why This Matters

This is why I find testing so helpful for women in this stage.

Because when you look at the data, patterns become very clear.

You can actually see:

- cortisol timing
- blood sugar response
- hormone shifts
- nutrient deficiencies

And for many women, that’s the moment things start to make sense.

If you are struggling right now... It’s not because your body is broken.
It’s because your body is asking for a different kind of support.

Support tailored to your unique body (not just eat less, exercise more, go back on birth control, take an antidepressant or sleeping med).

This is why I use functional testing with many of my clients.

## Where to Start

The opportunity isn’t to overhaul everything overnight.

It’s to start noticing patterns:

- When do you feel most tired?
- When do you get a second wind?
- How does your sleep actually feel?
- Are you waking overnight?
- Do you feel better with a full breakfast and lighter dinner?

Then connect the dots. Only then does the strategy become clear.

Some women move through perimenopause and feel mostly fine.

Not because they’re lucky, but because the systems underneath are supported.

And when they aren’t…

That’s when things start to feel harder.

## I Can Help

If you feel like you’re doing everything right...

but your body isn’t responding the way it used to…
this is exactly the work I do with women.

In a Discovery Call, we look at:
• what your body is currently doing
• what might be driving the weight, energy, or sleep changes
• and what would actually move the needle for you

You’ll leave with clarity on what’s going on and what to do next.

You don't have to keep guessing.
